Sophocles (497-406 BC) was a Greek poet. Author of works, like Antigone and Oedipus Rey, it is among the most outstanding figures of the Greek tragedy.
His life coincided with the period of maximum Splendour in Athens and although he was not too committed to political activity and lacked military aspirations, he was elected by the Athenians to play important political and military positions.
Sophocles, above all, was the poet of Athens. He Is currently regarded as the best of Greek playwrights for having transformed the spirit and prestige of tragedy.
