Egyptian scribes were those who knew the science of writing in ancient societies, were of great importance and occupied high positions on the social ladder. They were high-ranking officials as early as the Middle Kingdom. In the New Kingdom, the title of royal scribe was held even by princes. In the Late Antiquity there was the title of “scribe of the divine book” or Hiero-Grammata, which occupied a high position in the clergy. The Egyptian priests were highly cultured, for the temples were centres for the transmission of culture.
