Templar emblem. 12th-13th Century.
This relief represents the characteristic emblem of the Order of the Knights of the Temple of Solomon. This order of warrior monks was created in the Holy Land in the 12th century to protect Christian pilgrims and holy places. Two horsemen on a horse are depicted as a symbol of their brotherhood and initial poverty.
The circumscribed text is in Greek and Latin characters: Sigillum Militum Xpisti, meaning ”The seal of the soldiers of Christ”.
