The Egyptian Goddess Maat incarnates righteousness, truth and justice, thus presiding over the weight of the Souls of the deceased. The feather that adorns her head, which is her fundamental emblem, serves as a weight on one side of the scales, while on the other is the deceased’s own heart. If the heart is as light as the feather, the Soul is ready to pass through the Amenti (Egyptian heaven), otherwise they will have to return to earth to purify themselves.
Maat was worshipped throughout Egypt, and is, unlike the local or family gods, the pure personification of general ideas, symbolising the necessary balance by which the world does not capsize.
