Description

Archaeological reproduction of the cylinder of Cyrus, made of moulded marble (marble powder plus binder). Finished in imitation clay with patinas based on natural earths. Handmade in Spain.

Reproduction of the Cyrus Cylinder, based on the original piece which is in the British Museum in London and which was found in the 19th century by the Assyrian-British archaeologist Hormuzd Rassam at the archaeological site of Babylon (Iraq).

This piece recreates a clay cylinder covered with cuneiform inscriptions in the Akkadian-Babylonian language, containing a declaration by the king of Persia, Cyrus the Great (559-529 BC). The text contains a decree legitimising the Persian conquest of Babylon by portraying the defeated Babylonian king Nabonidus as an oppressive king, and presenting Cyrus as a liberator and benefactor of the people of Babylon, chosen by the god Marduk to restore peace. In the 20th century it was considered to be the first text relating to human rights.
