Celtic Cross. Relief of the base of a statue.
The Celtic cross is a variant of the Latin cross with a circle that crosses the arms of the cross, usually decorated with geometric motifs of Celtic origin. In the 7th century AD, engravings of this type of cross began to appear on flat stones spread out on the ground. It was from the 8th century onwards that the crosses themselves began to be erected, first by Irish monks, then spreading to the Celtic-influenced areas of Great Britain: Wales, Scotland, the Hebrides, as well as Cornwall and Northumbria. They fell into disuse definitively in the 15th century, but were revived by movements in the 19th century, romanticism and the nationalism that arose in Ireland.
