Cretan Griffin Bas-relief. Relief inspired by the mural painting of the Throne Room of the Palace of Knossos, Crete (Greece), Minoan period II (c. 1400 BCE).
The Palace of Knossos is a fascinating vestige of the ancient Minoan civilization, which flourished on the island of Crete between 3100 and 1050 BCE. This architectural complex, discovered in the 19th century and partially reconstructed by the British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans, evokes the grandeur and mystery of a culture lost in time. Its construction has been dated around 2000 BCE, and it is considered to have been an important administrative and ceremonial center of the ancient Minoan civilization.
Inspiring the myth of the labyrinth due to its complex structure, the Palace of Knossos sparks the imagination of visitors, transporting them to an era of myths and legends. The palace stands out for the colors of its columns, painted in intense red and blue, and for the frescoes that adorn the walls of the rooms, such as the famous fresco of the dolphins or those found in the throne room, highlighting the two figures of griffins painted on each side of the stone throne. Walking through the palace corridors evokes the figure of the mythical King Minos, showing the traces of a sophisticated and enigmatic culture that continues to captivate us today.
Decorating with reproductions of reliefs inspired by Minoan Crete embellishes our home, transporting us to the mystery of ancient civilizations.
