In the Greek and Roman world, the Bacchanal was a festival in honour of Bacchus, god of wine in Roman mythology, Dionysus in Greek mythology, in which people drank without measure. The priestesses who organised the ceremony were called bacchantes. The cult was exclusively female and derived from the original cult of the god Pan.
