Chinese art used a variety of materials such as bronze, jade and ceramics. The most spectacular and famous figures are the terracotta sculptures of the Xian Warriors, more than 8,000 life-size statues of soldiers and horses that were discovered during the excavation of the tomb of the first emperor (3rd century BC). In addition to these monumental sculptures, smaller figures of anonymous people and animals in everyday scenes were also depicted.
