Centauromachy from Olympia. Reproduction inspired by one of the marbles from the pediment of the temple of Zeus in Olympia. The original is attributed to Phidias.
Centaurs were mythical beings with the body of a horse and the torso of a man. They inhabited the mountainous regions of Thessaly and Arcadia. Their origin varies according to different versions. In one myth, they are the children of the Sun (Helios) and an Oceanid. In another, they are the offspring of Apollo and Hebe, the goddess of youth. The most famous and wise of all centaurs was Chiron, educator and mentor to many heroes and demigods, including Hercules.
Greek mythology recounts that in the wooded mountains of the region of Thessaly lived a race of fabulous and wild beings, half-men and half-horses: the centaurs, whose origin was lost in the mists of time. On one occasion, invited to a feast by the Lapiths (humans), the centaurs became drunk and led to a bloody battle in which they were defeated.
The myth represents, in a certain key, the existence of a dual nature in human beings (the instinct and brutal passions of the centaurs, and the reason and more human values of the Lapiths). This is the theme depicted in the 32 metopes on the south side of the Parthenon, which narrate the cruel confrontation between the two groups.
Decoration with reproductions of classical reliefs representing historical and mythological figures helps us evoke and bring to our days the greatness of ancient Greece.
