Description
Model of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, made of marble reconstituted with resin.
Measurements: 15 x 12 x 25 cm.
The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela is the model prototype for all European Romanesque buildings during the maturity of the style.
Its construction was promoted by Bishop Diego de Peláez around 1077 and was halted in 1088. Subsequently, Bishop Dalmatius, under the auspices of Diego Gelmirez, continued the work up to the transept and seems to have completed it around 1122. The chevet is structured in an ambulatory with radial chapels prolonged by the arms of the transept.
The vaulted tribunes appear above the naves and are illuminated through the intercolumniations by means of openings and clerestories, to which must be added the development of monumental sculpture forming the historiated portal. The Compostelan project is the first in its chronological conception, showing superiority in the quality of its architecture and in the monumental approach to the doorways.
