Description
Model of Bellver Castle, made of marble reconstituted with resin.
Measurements: 16 x 13 x 9 cm.
Bellver Castle, Palma de Mallorca. The construction of the fortress began at the beginning of the 14th century, at the time of the reinstatement of James I of Mallorca to the throne, and it was completed in 1311 and inhabited by the monarch three years later.
Its circular layout is unusual in Spanish kingdoms, but not in the Italian kingdoms, with which Mallorca always had close relations; three semicircular towers are embedded in it, and another one, the Homage tower, circular and isolated, as in some castles in northern France, was later joined to the complex by means of a walkway over a stone arch.
The parade ground, also circular, is enclosed by two arched galleries, semi-circular on the lower floor and interlaced on the upper floor. The Gothic castle was later used as a prison, its most famous guest being the enlightened politician Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos.
