Capital of the Monastery of San Andrés de Arroyo in Palencia.
The Cistercian monastery of San Andrés de Arroyo was founded around 1181 by Doña Mencía de Lara, influential lady of the time and first abbess of the monastery. It is, without a doubt, the most representative monument of the Tardorrománico Palencia, whose influence was felt in a series of humbler churches scattered by their surroundings. The stonemasons and sculptors who intervened in their decoration reached a high degree of technical perfection, the result of which are the amazing finishes presented by their capitals. One of the most representative pieces of this way of working is the column that decorates the southwest angle of the cloister, in nothing comparable to other peninsular models. It consists of bases with tongues, shaft with zig-zag decoration, sown with flowers and capital with draughts motifs.
