Johann Strauss (1825 – 1899) was an Austrian-German orchestra conductor and composer. He was known at his life-time as the “king of waltz” and is the mainly responsible for the popularity of the waltz in Vienna of the nineteenth century. He revolutionized the waltz, elevating it from a peasant dance to the entertainment of the Imperial Court of the Habsburgs. His works are most popular that of their predecessors, like his father and Josef Lanner. Some of his polkas and marches are also well known, as well his operetta Die Fledermaus (The Bat).
