This bust can be found in the Prado and plays an important role in the identification of the portrait of Cicero (106-43 BC), as the name of the famous Roman orator appears on the rectangular tablet on the pedestal, which is attached to the bust, where the abbreviated inscription: “M.CICERO AN. LXIIII”. This bust seems to reproduce a portrait sculpted during Cicero’s lifetime, between 60 and 50 BC, probably as a tribute for having revealed Catiline’s conspiracy in 63 BC, when he was consul. Cicero himself mentioned that the city of Capua had a statue erected to him.
