Head of Apollo of the sculpture in the front of the temple of Zeus at Olympia. 460 BC. This Apollo seems to symbolize the triumph of light over the shadow, of the sun over the darkness. This heroic Apollo has a marked face of archaic and hieratic traits.
The god Apollo was the son of Zeus – Jupiter and Leto or Latona, and twin of Diana or Artemis. In the course of time he became the Sun God himself, identifying himself with Helios. His nickname of Phoebus represents him as resplendent and also pure, holy, as the reproduction he holds in his hands shows, as an innocent and beautiful young man, for as the God of Light, he is at the same time the enemy of darkness and of all impurities. Also as the God of Light, he was considered to be the author and regulator of time and the seasons.
