William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616) was an English poet, playwright and actor, considered by many to be the greatest writer in the English language. He is often called England’s national poet and the “Bard of Avon”. His extant works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and some other verse, the authorship of some of which is uncertain. His plays have been translated into almost every language and more copies are made than of any other playwright.
Shakespeare is considered one of the most influential writers in world literature. Known as the “Bard of Avon,” his vast production includes notable tragedies like “Hamlet,” “Romeo and Juliet,” “King Lear,” and “Macbeth,” as well as comedies like “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “The Taming of the Shrew,” and “The Merchant of Venice.” Many of his works have been adapted into films and continue to be performed in theaters around the world. In his work, Shakespeare demonstrates his ability to explore human nature, creating complex and universal characters that encompass a wide range of behaviors and motivations. The timelessness and relevance of his theatrical works make him one of the greatest literary geniuses of all time.
