This reproduction is based on the statue dedicated to Leonidas in Sparta.
Leonidas I (c. 540 BC-480 BC), was a Spartan king who went down in history for his heroic defense at the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC along with 300 of his Spartan warriors, facing the army sent by Persian King Xerxes I.
While the Spartan army and their allies from other Greek city-states were stationed, the betrayal of one of them revealed to the Persians the existence of an alternative path, which allowed them to flank the Greeks.
Leonidas, aware of the numerical superiority of the Persians and their imminent defeat, ordered the majority of the army to retreat, staying at the pass of Thermopylae with 300 of his Spartan warriors along with another contingent of Greek soldiers to delay the Persian advance as much as possible. The heroic resistance at Thermopylae has gone down in history as an example of courage and sacrifice.
Historical figures from ancient Greece like Leonidas have inspired numerous works of art from antiquity to the present day. Reproductions of classical sculptures like this bust of Leonidas add a unique touch of distinction to the decoration of our favorite corner of the home or workplace, such as a library or office.
