The piece we reproduce is a bust of Homer inspired by the Homer Caetani, a Roman copy from the 2nd century AD, of a Greek original from the 2nd century BC. The original sculpture is currently located in the Louvre Museum, Paris, France.

Homer is a Greek poet believed to have lived sometime in the 8th century BC. He is considered one of the most important poets in Western literature and is attributed with two of the most influential works of ancient Greece and Western literature: The Iliad and The Odyssey.

Homer was an aoidos or Greek poet of the archaic period who is credited with writing down two epic poems that had until then been transmitted orally and that date back to the Mycenaean kingdoms (12th-11th century BC) and the war in which the Greeks fought against the city of Troy. The Iliad narrates a part of the Trojan War, focusing on the character of Achilles and his anger, which leads him to make decisions that change the course of the war. The Odyssey, on the other hand, narrates Odysseus’ journey to return home to the island of Ithaca after the Trojan War.
