The sculpture we reproduce is a bust of Emperor Antoninus Pius (86 – 161 AD). Successor to Hadrian, he was known for his good administration of the empire, and upon his death, he was succeeded by the philosopher emperor Marcus Aurelius.

Titus Fulvius Boionius Arrius Antoninus Pius, known as Antoninus Pius, ruled the Roman Empire from 138 to 161 AD. He was the fourth of the Five Good Emperors. Succeeding Hadrian, Antoninus’ rule marked a period of stability in the Roman Empire, characterized by effective administration, fiscal responsibility, and respect for institutions such as the Senate. Antoninus Pius is also known for his love for his wife Faustina, to whom he dedicated a temple upon her death. Marcus Aurelius, the philosopher emperor, succeeded him. His reign is considered a time of relative peace and prosperity in Roman history, and his legacy endured as an example of good governance.
