Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius (121 AD–180 AD) is one of the “Five Good Emperors.” Known as the philosopher-emperor, he ruled alongside co-emperor Lucius Verus from 161 to 180 AD. One of the most notable Stoic philosophers, his best-known work, Meditations, is a collection of his personal thoughts rooted in Stoicism, focusing on the constant pursuit of virtue and wisdom and applying them in everyday life.
During his reign, Marcus Aurelius faced numerous significant challenges, including wars against the Barbarians and the Persians, epidemics, and internal crises. Stoic philosophy helped him endure the pressures of governance, applying Stoic ideas that encourage calmly accepting adversity and cultivating virtues such as generosity, justice, self-discipline, and moderation.
Today, Marcus Aurelius is still admired as an exemplary leader, known for exercising political power from a practical philosophical perspective, always seeking self-improvement and the practice of virtues.
The decoration of interiors with reproductions of sculptures of characters of classical antiquity, such as this bust of Marcus Aurelius, gives a touch of sophistication to the spaces of our home.
“Always think with such purity and order that, if questioned, we could immediately answer what we are thinking without shame.”
