In 1970, during archaeological excavations in Fréjus, this two-headed bust of Hermes, made of white marble, was found. The sculpture, probably dating back to the mid-1st century AD, is part of the collection of the Archaeological Museum of Fréjus. This bust has become the symbol of the city and inspired the artist who created the monumental fountain that adorns the Gate of Hermes.

Bust Hermes of Frejus, Roman art from the time of Augustus. This figure is particularly original because of its double face reminiscent of the Roman god Janus Bifrons. This piece has two faces, one of Faunus, characterized as a young man with attributes of a goat, and the other representing Hermes or a bearded Dionysus. The features recall the archaic Greek style transitioning to the classical.

The god Hermes, as the messenger of the gods, is the bridge between Olympus and mortals. Son of Jupiter and Maia, he is a protector god of travelers and patron of merchants, and also personifies eloquence and cunning. In his role as a psychopomp god, he accompanies souls on their journey to the afterlife.

Faunus or Pan was part of the retinue of Dionysus, the god of wine; fauns and satyrs are divinities of the wild nature and are usually depicted with goat legs and playing the flute.
