Bust- Apollo of Belvedere. The sculpture of Apollo of Belvedere, also called the Pythian Apollo, is a famous marble statue from Classical Antiquity. It was rediscovered in the late 15th century during the Renaissance and was displayed in the courtyard of the Vatican’s Belvedere, from which it takes its name. Since the mid-18th century, it was considered by neoclassicism as the best sculpture of Antiquity, serving as a model, and for centuries, it was regarded as the ideal of aesthetic perfection in Western European culture.
In Greek and Roman mythology, Apollo is one of the most important and multifaceted Olympian gods. Apollo is the son of Zeus and Leto and the twin brother of the virgin huntress Artemis. Represented in iconography as the ideal kurós (beardless youth), Apollo was revered in ancient Greece and Rome as the god of light and the sun, truth and prophecy, inspiring and conveying messages through priestesses at the Oracle of Delphi. He is also the patron of medicine and healing, the arts in general, and particularly music and poetry, often accompanied by the 9 Muses. His attributes include the bow and arrows, the lyre, the laurel crown, and his symbolic animals, the crow and the serpent, associated with medicine.
Reproductions of large classical sculptures of gods, goddesses, and heroes from Antiquity, such as this Apollo bust, are an elegant and timeless way to add a touch of sophistication to the decoration of our homes.
