Buddha is the Enlightened One, a human being who has reached Nirvana, the total liberation from pain. Siddhartha Gautama Buddha was a prince of a kingdom in northwest India in the 6th-5th centuries BC, who renounced wealth and office and embarked on a life of seeking knowledge, asceticism and renunciation. It is said that sitting in meditation under the Budhi tree he attained enlightenment, after which he dedicated himself to transmitting the teaching about the path to the cessation of suffering, the end of the cycle of reincarnations and total liberation and fusion with the Absolute.
In oriental art, the Buddha may appear in various postures or asanas, the most common being in the lotus position, standing or lying down. A standing figure symbolises the Buddha who attained Nirvana on his return to the world to transmit to other human beings the knowledge of the path to liberation.
