Crowned Buddha. Pala style. 10th century.
This statue depicts a seated and crowned Buddha. It belongs to the Kurkihar style of the Pala period and was made in Bihar (India). The Eastern artistic style of the Pala period had a great impact on the arts in Asia. The Pala-period territories in the area included the main Buddhist pilgrimage sites. Pilgrims often returned home with icons and statues that had a great influence on artists in their homeland. The original is in the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
