Reproduction of a figure of the god Hermes on a round column.
In Ancient Greece, Hermes (Mercury in Rome) was the son of Zeus and the nymph Maya, the messenger and herald of the gods, who guides guests on Olympus, helps heroes in their adventures and communicates divine messages to mortals. Consequently, he is the patron god of travellers and merchants, but also of thieves and swindlers. Hermes is also the conductor of souls after death and, as such, leads the recently deceased from the world of the living to the realm of Hades. He is depicted wearing a hat and winged sandals, holding the caduceus, a staff with two intertwined serpents.
