Reproduction of a figure of Caesar Augustus on a Corinthian column.
Octavian Augustus (63 BC-14 AD) was the first Roman emperor. The imperial institution succeeded the triumvirate which Octavian had formed with Mark Antony and Lepidus and which came to an end after Octavian defeated Mark Antony at the Battle of Actium (31 BC).
During the rule of Caesar Augustus and in successive years the countries of the Mediterranean experienced relative peace, a period known as the Pax Romana or Pax Augusta.
