The neoclassical sculpture reproduced here is known as “Gloria Victis” or “Glory of the vanquished”. It represents an angel, an allegory of Fame or Hope, raising a man who has fallen in battle.
The original sculpture is the work of the French artist Antonin Mercié (1845-1916). Several copies of the statue exist, such as those on display in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, or in the cathedral of Saint André in Bordeaux, France.
