Bicephalous snake. Relief of a two-headed snake inspired by an Aztec sculpture, the original piece is made of wood, turquoise, shell, and jade, currently exhibited at the British Museum in London. It is believed to have belonged to the treasure that the Aztec king Moctezuma gave to Hernán Cortés upon the arrival of the Spaniards in Mexico in the 16th century.
Mexican or Aztec symbology is the result of the synthesis of the beliefs and millennial traditions of the ancient Mesoamerican peoples. Of great complexity, it encompasses existence itself, the creation of the universe, and the situation of the human being regarding the divine. Coatl is the Aztec term for serpent, an animal that reflects material or earthly elements. In this sculpture of a two-headed snake, an aspect of duality is represented, reflecting the connection between material and spiritual principles.
In Mesoamerica, the serpent was related to one of the main gods, Quetzalcoatl, the Feathered Serpent, which symbolized the union of Heaven, remembered by the bird’s feathers, and Earth, in the figure of the snake. This animal also represents rebirth due to its ability to shed its skin and appear rejuvenated.
The incorporation of art reproductions into interior decoration adds a dimension of elegance and culture to our homes. Reliefs like this Aztec serpent, with its motifs inspired by the mythology of other cultures, such as Pre-Hispanic America, infuse an air of nobility and sophistication into our favorite corners.
