Bas-relief Venus of Botticelli, relief inspired by the painting “La Primavera” by Sandro Botticelli. It is the fragment that represents the goddess Venus, the central figure of the original painting. The goddess appears with her hand raised in a traditional welcoming gesture, crowned by Cupid, the god of love, flying over her head. In this composition, Cupid’s bow and arrows have been replaced by an orange branch, just as Botticelli paints the scene among orange trees in the painting, this tree being an allusion to the coat of arms of the Medici family, the ruling family of Florence and patrons of Renaissance artists.

In classical mythology, Venus, identified in Rome with the Greek goddess Aphrodite, is the goddess of love, beauty, and fertility. The myth tells of Venus’s birth from the waters, emerging from the foam generated by the fall into the sea of the genitals of the sky god, Uranus, mutilated by his son Cronus-Saturn. The aquatic origin of the goddess highlights Venus’s connection with water as a symbol of fertility, regeneration, and life. Venus was represented with symbolic attributes such as the rose and the mirror, and animals such as the dove or the swan, and represents love in all its facets, ranging from universal harmony to human desire and passion, seduction, and beauty.

Venus was associated with different lovers, from her legitimate husband, the blacksmith god Vulcan, or his brother, Mars, the god of war, to mortals like the beautiful Adonis, after whose death she descended to Hades.
