Description
Model of the Basilica of Begoña in Bilbao, made of marble reconstituted with resin.
Measurements: 17 x 10 x 16 cm.
The Basilica of the Virgin of Begoña, erected on the southern slope of the hill of Artagán, has presided over the spiritual life of Biscay for centuries. According to tradition, the discovery of an image of the Virgin in an oak tree led to the construction of a small chapel to venerate her.
On top of this primitive building, a church with three naves was built in 1519, with flying buttresses and exterior buttresses, which was enlarged in 1588. The architect responsible for the project was the architect Sancho Martínez de Arego. It has a Gothic side door leading to a small portico and another at the foot, from the end of the 16th century, sheltered by a large arch. The tower is a modern work from 1907, designed by the architect José María de Basterra. Inside, the image of the Virgin and Child, a Gothic carving from the late 13th or early 14th century, is venerated.
