Bas-relief “Venus and Adonis”. Decorative relief made of molded alabaster (alabaster powder with binders). Finished with oil polychrome applications and gilded finishes. The aging finish is achieved with patinas that give it the texture and appearance of an antique sculpture embellished by the passage of time.

Measurements: Height: 110 cm. Width: 67 cm.

Bas-relief “Venus and Adonis”. Inspired by the work of Bartolomeus Spranger (1546-1611), one of the most respected Flemish painters of his time. It depicts Venus (Aphrodite), the goddess of love, along with her mortal lover Adonis.

In Greek mythology, Adonis was the son of an incestuous relationship between the princess Myrrha and her father Cinyras. After Adonis was born, his mother, before dying, hid him in the trunk of a tree, where he was found by the goddess Aphrodite, who took care of him. Adonis grew up to become a beautiful young man, and Aphrodite fell in love with him. After the young man’s death in a hunting accident, Aphrodite descended to the Underworld where she argued for his return with Persephone, the queen of the Underworld. They finally agreed that Adonis would spend half of the year in the world of the living, with Aphrodite, and the other half of the year with Persephone in the Underworld.
