Bas-relief “Riding Scene”. Reproduction of one of the reliefs from the Parthenon.
This relief recreates a fragment of the Parthenon friezes (British Museum, London). The scene depicts young Athenian riders participating in the Panathenaic procession. This procession was part of the summer festival procession in honor of Athena.
The Parthenon friezes are a series of bas-reliefs, sculpted in Pentelic marble by the school of Phidias in the 5th century BC (447 BC to 438 BC), with an approximate height of one meter and a total length of 160 meters, surrounding the perimeter of the temple of Athena Parthenos on the Acropolis of Athens.
These pieces were located at the top of the Parthenon’s cella, and they depicted the grand Panathenaic procession, a festival in honor of the patron goddess of the city of Athens, the goddess Athena. The relief friezes show the participants in the procession, featuring maidens carrying embroidered peplos as offerings to the goddess, along with other characters such as aristocrats and magistrates, common people with their offerings, musicians, high-ranking military officials, soldiers, and horseback knights.
Decorating with reproductions of ancient sculptures, like this relief from the Parthenon, enhances our home and evokes the cultural greatness of past times and civilizations that have left a lasting legacy in the history of art.
