Relief “Rapture of Persephone”. Relief depicting the scene of the abduction of Persephone by the god Hades. The myth of Demeter and Persephone is an integral part of Greek mythology and tells the moving story of the goddess Demeter’s descent into the underworld in search of her daughter, giving rise to the seasons of the year following one of the interpretation keys of this myth.

Demeter, the goddess of agriculture, lived happily with her daughter Persephone until Hades, the god of the underworld, abducted her. Then, the goddess of crops, plunged into sadness, descends to Hades, and her disappearance from the surface of the earth causes the inactivity in nature typical of winter. Desperate to recover Persephone, Demeter appears before her brother Hades in the underworld, and the sterility of nature that her disappearance has caused leads Zeus to intervene, agreeing to a compromise: Persephone would spend half the year in the realm of the Underworld and the rest on the surface.

In one of its interpretations, this myth symbolizes the cycles of nature of dormancy and regeneration, representing the joyful reunion of mother and daughter each spring, and their painful separation announced by the fall of autumn leaves. In another symbolic interpretation, it is seen as a metaphor for the cycle of life and death, where Persephone symbolizes constant resurrection and renewal. This mythical tale reminds us of the profound connection between mother earth and her eternal cycles.
