Bas-relief “Parthenon Horses”. This relief recreates a fragment of the friezes of the Parthenon (British Museum in London). The scene depicts young Athenians bursting into the Panathenaic procession, effortlessly holding the reins of the horses. The procession was part of the summer festival in honor of Athena.
The Parthenon friezes are a series of bas-reliefs, sculpted in Pentelic marble by the school of Phidias in the 5th century BC (from 447 BC to 438 BC), with an approximate height of one meter and a total length of 160 meters, surrounding the perimeter of the temple of Athena Parthenos on the Acropolis of Athens.
These pieces were located on the upper part of the Parthenon’s cella, and they depicted the grand procession of the Panathenaea, a festival in honor of the city’s patron, the goddess Athena. The reliefs on the frieze feature participants in the procession, including maidens carrying embroidered peploses as offerings to the goddess, along with other figures such as aristocrats and magistrates, common people with their offerings, musicians, high-ranking military officers, soldiers, and horsemen.
Decorating with reproductions of reliefs from classical antiquity, such as this bas-relief of the Parthenon, is an elegant and timeless way to add a touch of sophistication to the spaces of our homes. With these pieces representing historical and mythological scenes, we evoke and bring to our days the greatness of ancient Greece art.
