The sculpture we offer is a reproduction of a relief dedicated to the Roman general Scipio made by the sculptor Verrocchio; the original is located in the Louvre Museum.
In this reproduction, we recreate a relief made between 1470-1480 by the Florentine sculptor Andrea di Michele di Francesco de’ Cioni, better known as Andrea del Verrocchio or simply Il Verrocchio, in whose workshop Leonardo da Vinci trained as an apprentice. This work is part of a series dedicated to characters from classical antiquity. During the Renaissance, nobles and powerful individuals commissioned artists to create effigies of the great generals and heroes of ancient Greece and Rome to whom they wanted to be compared. In this context, Verrocchio sculpted four reliefs following the trend of depicting opposing characters: in this case, he portrays the Roman general Scipio Africanus and his rival, the Carthaginian Hannibal, along with another pair consisting of Alexander the Great and the Persian king Darius.
Decorating with reproductions of reliefs inspired by Renaissance works, such as this bas-relief of Scipio by the sculptor Verrocchio, brings to our homes the splendor, harmony, and elegance characteristic of Renaissance art.
The reliefs, with their depth and detail, add a unique dimension to any space, whether it be the living room, study, library, or garden. These sculptures and reliefs reproduce masterpieces by Renaissance artists and geniuses such as Verrocchio, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, or Raphael, becoming central elements of room decoration.
