Bas-relief of Iolaos in the Garden of the Hesperides. Scene representing Iolaos, seated with one of the Hesperides, a relief inspired by Greek ceramic vases found in the British Museum of London. This relief reproduces a scene from the hydria of Meidias (a type of Greek ceramic vase), red-figure pottery created by the Painter of Meidias between 420-400 BC. In the original vase, the upper register depicted the abduction of the daughters of Leucippus by the Dioscuri (the twins Castor and Pollux), while the lower one shows the work of Heracles in the Garden of the Hesperides.
Iolaos was the nephew of the demigod Heracles or Hercules, whom he accompanied and aided in some of the famous Twelve Labors. These tasks were initially considered impossible to complete, yet the hero managed to accomplish them, sometimes relying on his legendary strength, as in the first labor of the Nemean Lion, whose skin the hero wore thereafter, and at other times he also resorted to cunning, as in the case of the Hydra of Lerna, where he had the help of Iolaos, or in the task of stealing the apples from the Garden of the Hesperides.
Reproductions of classical reliefs add a touch of special elegance to interior decoration and help us recreate in our homes a unique atmosphere that evokes the greatness of past civilizations. These pieces, representing characters and scenes from Greek mythology, transport viewers to a world full of mystery, creating a timeless connection between the past and the present.
