Bas-relief of Horses with frieze. This bas-relief recreates a fragment of the friezes of the Parthenon (British Museum in London). The scene shows two young Athenians participating in the Panathenaic procession, riding their horses. This procession was part of the summer festival held in honor of Athena.

The Parthenon friezes are a series of bas-reliefs, sculpted in Pentelic marble by the school of Phidias in the 5th century BC (447 BC to 438 BC), with an approximate height of one meter and a total length of 160 meters, which surrounded the perimeter of the temple of Athena Parthenos on the Acropolis of Athens.

These pieces were located at the top of the Parthenon’s cella, and they depicted the grand procession of the Panathenaea, a festival held in honor of the goddess Athena as the patroness of the city of Athens. The reliefs on the frieze depict the participants in the procession, led by maidens carrying embroidered peploses as offerings to the goddess, along with other characters such as aristocrats and magistrates, common people with their offerings, musicians, high-ranking military officials, soldiers, and horseback riders.
