The relief is based on the fresco located in the Farnese Palace in Rome, titled Triumph of Bacchus and Ariadne, painted by Annibale Carracci between 1597 and 1600, considered a masterpiece by this artist.
The image is inspired by the myth of Ariadne and Bacchus – Dionysus. After helping Theseus out of the Minotaur’s Labyrinth, Ariadne was abandoned by the Athenian on the island of Naxos. Ariadne remained on the island until she encountered Dionysus and his retinue. The god of wine and enthusiasm fell in love with Ariadne, and they were joined in marriage.
This Greek myth has inspired numerous works of art from Classical Antiquity to the present day. With reproductions of Renaissance or Baroque reliefs, such as this bas-relief of Bacchus and Ariadne, we add a unique touch of distinction to our favorite corner or workplace, such as a library or office.
