Bas-relief Garden of Venus. Framed relief made in molded alabaster (alabaster powder molded with binders). Finish with oil polychromy, golden and polychrome finishes in tempera. Golden wood frame with stucco.

Bas-relief Garden of Venus, relief inspired by one of the 10 pendentives of the Psiche gallery in the Villa Farnesina in Rome. Built between 1505 and 1511, in 1580 it was acquired by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, from whom it took its name. The villa houses several rooms and galleries decorated with frescoes, one of the most notable being the Cupid and Psyche gallery, whose paintings recount this legend, immortalized by the Roman writer Apuleius in his novel “The Golden Ass.” One of the scenes of the legend of Cupid and Psyche is represented in this relief, specifically “Venus with Ceres and Juno”.

In classical mythology, Venus, identified in Rome with the Greek goddess Aphrodite, is the goddess of love, beauty, and fertility. The myth tells of Venus’s birth from the waters, emerging from the foam generated by the fall into the sea of the genitals of the sky god, Uranus, mutilated by his son Cronus-Saturn. Venus represents love in all its facets, ranging from universal harmony to human desire and passion, beauty, and seduction. Venus had different lovers, both divine, like Mars, the god of war, brother of her legitimate husband, the blacksmith god Vulcan; or human, like the handsome Adonis, for whose death Venus descended to Hades.
