Bas-relief “Birth of Venus” by Botticelli. Recreation inspired by the painting “The Birth of Venus” (c. 1482-1485), by the Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510). Exhibited at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, this painting is considered one of the masterpieces of the Italian Quattrocento.
In classical mythology, Venus, identified in Rome with the Greek goddess Aphrodite, is the goddess of love, beauty, and fertility. The myth tells of Venus’s birth from the waters, arising from the foam generated by the fall into the sea of the genitals of the sky god, Uranus, mutilated by his son Cronos-Saturn. The myths on which Botticelli’s work is based narrate how the goddess arrived riding on a shell to the shores of Cythera, and according to other versions, to the island of Cyprus. The aquatic origin of the goddess highlights Venus’s connection to water as a symbol of fertility, regeneration, and life.
Botticelli’s painting reflects the thought of the Neoplatonic school of Florence, following the writings of Plato in which two versions of the goddess were distinguished: Aphrodite Pandemos, born of Zeus and Dione, representing common love, passion, and sexual desire; and Aphrodite Urania, born of Uranus, symbolizing spiritual love.
Incorporating reproductions of classical reliefs into our home decor creates a unique atmosphere that evokes the greatness of Renaissance art, blending with contemporary design and style.
