The famous painting of Meidum geese was part of a scene of hunting birds with red painted stucco in the mastaba of Nefermaat and his spouse Atet. Nefermaat was son and vizier of Sneferu, first Pharaoh of the fourth dynasty (ruling circa 2614 – 2589 BC).. The mastaba was discovered by Auguste Mariette in 1871 and studied by Petrie. The frieze of the geese was in the chapel of Atet.
