Reproduction of a bas-relief of a Mayan ball-player. 6th century AD. National Museum of Anthropology, Mexico City.
This circular slab comes from the Maya city of Chincultic. It is a disc-marker depicting a ball player at a moment of the game. It is surrounded by hieroglyphs of the Long Count (Mayan calendrical system) indicating the date on which the ball court was inaugurated, which according to the most widely accepted correlation would correspond to 591 AD in our Gregorian calendar.
