The piece shown here is a bas-relief of the god Bes found in the Egyptian temple dedicated to Hathor at Dendera.
The god Bes is depicted as a dwarf genie, hairy and showing his tongue. He is usually depicted naked or covered with a lion’s skin.
He was a guardian deity of marriage and children. He warded off evil spirits that could attack them during sleep. For all these reasons he is found in a multitude of magical amulets.
