Detail in relief of an Islamic painting, 17TH century. The art of the Islamic book includes painting, bookbinding, calligraphy and illumination. In other words, arabesques and drawings in the margins and in the titles. However, the Islamic art is not religious, and artists also used other sources, including the literature. Arabic literature is not the only representations; the Fables of Indian origin (Calila and Dimna) or (Magamat) were frequently illustrated in workshops of Baghdad or Syria. The question of figurative representation in Islam is still very complex.
