Relief interpretation of eight- and four-pointed tiles from the Kabadabad Palace, near Konya, Turkey. Pre-Islamic cultures. Early Islamic objects are very difficult to distinguish from objects from earlier Sassanid and Byzantine or Umayyad periods. Islamic artists used similar techniques and motifs to their neighbouring peoples. Islamic art is often thought to be entirely aniconic (depictions through symbols), yet numerous figures and animals can be seen in ceramics.
