Reproduction of the statue of Asclepius, the God of medicine, found in the sanctuary of Epidaurus. The original is housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. The sanctuary of Epidaurus was an asclepeion, a temple built in honor of Asclepius, intended for the healing of the sick.
Asclepius, in Greek mythology, is the god of medicine and healing. The son of Apollo and the mortal Coronis, Asclepius was educated by the centaur Chiron, who taught him the arts of healing. He was revered as the protector of healers and doctors in ancient Greece and later worshiped in Rome under the name of Aesculapius. He is depicted as a mature bearded man carrying a staff with an entwined serpent, a symbol still used in modern medicine.
Temples dedicated to Asclepius, called “Asclepions,” were healing centers where therapeutic methods were practiced alongside religious rituals. The sick sought the god’s help by sleeping in the sanctuaries, believing that Asclepius would provide solutions and treatments for their ailments through messages transmitted in dreams.
The legacy of Asclepius endures today as a symbol of the pursuit of health and healing.
