Description
Model of the Arch of Santa MarÃa made of marble reconstituted with resin.
Measurements: 11 x 11 x 11 cm.
The ‘Arch of Santa MarÃa‘ is one of the best known civil constructions in the city of Burgos. It was originally conceived as a simple watchtower, an open gate in the medieval wall, on the banks of the river, through which access was gained to the vicinity of the cathedral.
In the 16th century (1536) it was transformed in honour of Emperor Charles V, acquiring the monumental appearance it has today, by the architects Felipe Bigarny, Juan Vallejo and Francisco de Colonia. In addition to the defensive elements (towers), the rich sculptural decoration by the stonemason MartÃn Ochoa de Arteaga is also worth mentioning.
The figures placed in the niches represent local historical personalities of the stature of the judges Nuno Rasura and Lain Calvo, the counts Diego Porcelo and Fernán González and the Cid Campeador himself. In the centre is the figure of Carlos V and topping the ensemble are the images of the Guardian Angel and the Virgin.
