In this sculpture, we reproduce an archaic style statue from Magna Graecia (Southern Italy) found in Ugento (Apulia, Italy), in a private house. The original sculpture (dating around 530 BCE) is currently housed in the Archaeological Museum of Taranto. It is the only example in the region of sculpture created using the lost-wax technique and depicts Zeus in the moment of casting the thunderbolt. Zeus can be recognized by the remnants of his attributes as the father of the gods: traces of a lightning bolt in the right hand and an eagle’s claw in the left.
The Greek god Zeus, known as Jupiter in Roman mythology, is the all-powerful god of the sky. Ruler of Mount Olympus and king of the gods, Zeus personifies cosmic order. His image is associated with the lightning bolt, a symbol of his divine power. The son of Cronus and Rhea, Zeus led the rebellion against the Titans, securing his dominion over heaven and earth. Zeus is characterized by his justice and mercy, although in some myths, he may appear relentless and vengeful. He often assumes various forms to interact with mortals and is depicted as a mature, bearded man with his attributes: the lightning bolt and scepter, accompanied by his symbolic animal, the eagle.
Interior decoration with reproductions of sculptures representing characters from classical mythology, such as this statue of archaic Zeus of Ugento, is an elegant and timeless way to add a touch of sophistication to the spaces in our homes. With these statues depicting historical and mythological figures, we evoke and bring the grandeur of ancient Greece and Rome to our present days.
