Apolo of Belvedere Bust. The bust we offer is a reproduction of the sculpture of the Apollo of Belvedere, named because after its discovery in the late 15th century, during the Renaissance, it was exhibited in the Belvedere Courtyard of the Vatican. This statue is supposed to be a Roman copy from an original Greek bronze attributed to the sculptor Leochares. Also called the Pythian Apollo, it was considered the best ancient sculpture by Neoclassicism and for centuries was seen as the epitome and ideal of beauty and aesthetic perfection in European and Western culture.
In Greek and Roman mythology, Apollo is one of the most important and multifaceted Olympian gods. Apollo is the son of Zeus and Leto and the twin brother of the virgin huntress Artemis (Diana in Rome). Depicted in iconography as the ideal kouros (beardless youth), Apollo was venerated in ancient Greece and Rome as the god of light and the sun, truth and prophecy, inspiring and conveying messages through the Pythian priestesses at the oracle of Delphi. He is also the patron of medicine and healing, of the arts in general, and particularly of music and poetry, often appearing accompanied by the nine Muses. His attributes include the bow and arrows, the lyre, the laurel wreath, and his symbolic animals, the raven and the snake, associated with medicine.
